Between Order & Chaos
SUBSTAK is the electronic music project of Kostas Staikos, based in Athens, Greece. Active since the early 2010s, he has developed a body of work situated at the intersection of ambient, drone, dub techno, and experimental sound design, with a particular focus on texture, spatialization, and extended listening states.
With Structural Shifts, SUBSTAK continues his exploration of the unstable zones between sonic matter, memory, and environment. Built from a natural field recording where rain, birds, and thunderstorms intertwine, the album transforms a raw landscape into an inner listening space, almost suspended in time. Reality becomes a primary material, gradually deconstructed and reorganized into a continuous flow of textures and micro-sonic events.
Through this process, SUBSTAK unfolds a distinctive aesthetic: music rooted in the foundations of contemporary ambient and dub techno, yet freed from rhythmic rigidity, favoring the slow mutation of forms, densities, and perception.
SUBSTAK est le projet de musique électronique de Kostas Staikos, basé à Athènes. Actif depuis le début des années 2010, il développe une œuvre située à la croisée de l'ambient, du drone, de la dub techno et du sound design expérimental, avec une attention particulière portée aux textures, à la spatialisation et aux états d'écoute prolongée.
Avec Structural Shifts, SUBSTAK poursuit son exploration des zones instables entre matière sonore, mémoire et environnement. Construit à partir d'un field recording naturel où pluie, oiseaux et orages se croisent, l'album transforme un paysage brut en un espace d'écoute intérieur, presque suspendu. Le réel devient une matière première progressivement déconstruite puis réorganisée en un flux continu de textures et de micro-événements sonores.
À travers ce processus, SUBSTAK déploie une esthétique singulière : une musique ancrée dans les fondations de l'ambient et de la dub techno contemporaine, mais affranchie de toute rigidité rythmique, privilégiant la lente mutation des formes, des densités et de la perception.
